Status of Swedish citizens in the UK

The Migation Advisory Committee (MAC) has been asked by the British Home Secretary to complete a detailed assessment of the role of EU citizens in the UK.  This work does not affect EU citizens living here. It concerns the future immigration system.

On 26th June the British government outlined its proposal to protect the position of EU citizens in the UK and UK nationals in the EU as follows:

  • EU citizens with settled status will continue to be treated as if they were UK nationals for education, healthcare, benefits, pensions and social housing after the UK leave the EU
  • No EU citizen currently in the UK lawfully will be asked to leave at the point we leave the EU.  The U.K. Will allow two years for people to settle their status
  • The process to apply for settled status will be streamlined and will include those who already hold a permanent residence document under current free movement rules. The system will be up and running in 2018

EU citizens do not need to apply for documentation confirming their status now.

Please visit status of EU citizens in the UK: what you need to know for further details about the 26th June policy proposal.  The next round of negotiations is scheduled for late August 2017.

Swedish visitors enjoy VR in Gateshead

Software architect Anna Rameback demonstrates a VR headset to Swedish colleagues from Varmland

Visitors from the Swedish digital sector paid a visit to cutting edge virtual reality technology at VRTGO Labs in Gateshead in May.  Gateshead Council hosted the visitors from Region Varmland in West Sweden with the aim of showcasing the area as a business destination for digital companies.  The group also had the opportunity to attend the iconic Thinking Digital conference at Sage Gateshead, now in its 9th year, with over 300 attendees and organised by Gateshead -based Thinking Digital Limited.

This latest visit builds on the Commitment to Collaboration signed last year between Gateshead Council and the Sunne Municipality in the Värmland region, to develop reciprocal trade and investment opportunities.

The group included Magnus Bårdén, Managing Director at Compare, a network representing 100 digital companies.

Magnus said: “I’m really interested in the digital thinking here. We’ve heard a lot about the digital enterprises in Gateshead and I want to know more about the region and its possibilities, as well as make connections and contacts. We’re here for three days and have a lot to see and think about.”

Another visitor, Anna Ramebäck, Managing Director, of Journalia AB, a company developing online systems for the Healthcare sector said:  “We are interested in looking for a different market. I build software for the healthcare market –  managing pharmaceuticals for such things as cancer treatment –  and I’m hoping this trip will help me make connections and give me a clearer picture of how we move forward in our business.”

The delegation also included business development managers from Sunne Municipality and lecturers from Brobygrafiska College, Sweden’s leading product design college. The trip was organised in consultation with Caroline Theobald CBE, the Honorary Consul for Sweden.

Svensk hockeykväll i Billingham

Billingham Stars’ game against Sheffield Spartans at the Billingham Forum last Sunday 28th February saw the club hold a Swedish-themed night in front of a full house in collaboration with the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by local car dealership Mill Volvo. With the Forum packed with invited dignitaries, special guests and the Stars’ faithful fans, the Lord Mayor of Stockton got the game under way with a ceremonial puck drop, accompanied by our Swedish Consule, Caroline Theobald CBE.

union-jack_0This spectacular dinner took place on 9th February 2016 and was the most attended consulate dinner by Swedish residents so far.  There was a hugely eclectic mix of ages and occupations, with 12 out of 22 guests being Swedish.  The atmosphere was full-filled and our guests, together with their partners, enjoyed great conversation along with excellent food and wine.

Some guests had travelled far, with Rolf Malm flying over specially from Region Västra Götaland.  Rolf also took the opportunity of his visit to arrange Creative Links meetings, the culture led partnership we have with Region Västra Götaland.  We were delighted to have previous Consul Christopher Souter together with his wife Erica and Rev Canon Glyn Evans and Judy, who host the annual Lucia celebrations at St Andrew’s Church.

It was great to introduce Swedish citizens to a very English dinner, complete with toasts and lots of local humour!
